Chapter 588 — The Young Miss's Phone Call
Lai's wife had only spoken up because she feared being held to blame, but Fatty Lai was adamant, so naturally she said no more. In truth, Fatty Lai was a clever man, and his wife knew he would never bring home a man at death's door without good reason.
Fatty Lai paced back and forth in the doorway of Wei Zhao's room. Soon his wife came up with a bowl of noodles; he took it and swallowed a couple of mouthfuls, and then the phone Wei Zhao had left with him began to ring.
Fatty Lai glanced at the caller ID. It was Tang Yun. He snatched up the phone at once. "Hello, Sister-in-law!"
"Fatty Lai? Where's Wei Zhao? Why isn't he answering his phone?" Tang Yun was badly worried about Wei Zhao's safety. Hours had passed, and he had neither come back nor called. How could she not worry?
The two of them had only just cleared away their misunderstanding and were in that clinging, inseparable stage, so Tang Yun wanted nothing more than for Wei Zhao to hurry home and stay by her side.
"Well..." Fatty Lai hesitated a moment, then said, "The Boss is fine. He's a bit tired, that's all. He's sleeping for a while."
"Sleeping?" Tang Yun was taken aback, and a faint unease stirred in her heart. "Fatty Lai, tell me — what exactly happened to Wei Zhao? Wake him up and put him on the phone!"
"Sister-in-law, the Boss really is tired, he just wants to rest a while..." Fatty Lai did not want to lie to Tang Yun either, but Wei Zhao had instructed him not to tell her, and Fatty Lai was in a real bind. He had no idea how to fob her off — after all, Tang Yun and Wei Zhao were no ordinary pair, and any common excuse would never do.
"Fatty Lai, if you don't tell me the truth right now, I'll see to it that Wei Zhao never speaks to you again!" Tang Yun was frantic, and she made the threat.
"Gah!" Fatty Lai cried out in alarm, and he was sorely troubled. Wei Zhao had told him not to breathe a word to Tang Yun about his mishap, yet here was Tang Yun threatening to have Wei Zhao cut him off, and Fatty Lai truly did not know what to do!
"He's not badly hurt. Don't forget, the Boss himself is a miracle doctor. He's in there healing his wounds right now..."
"What! Wei Zhao is injured?" Tang Yun was shocked. "Where are you now?"
"At my place. Don't worry, Sister-in-law — as soon as Wei Zhao wakes up, I'll tell him to call you back..." Fatty Lai explained.
"No. I'm coming over right now. Where is your home?" Tang Yun was anxious. Wei Zhao was hurt, and it must have been over her affairs that he was hurt; how could she possibly not go and see him?
"That... all right." There was no way for Fatty Lai to refuse, so he agreed. "I'll have my wife come and pick you up. It's so late, and I wouldn't feel easy about it otherwise."
"Then... I'll have to trouble you." Tang Yun was in no mood for pleasantries with Fatty Lai now. Wei Zhao's safety was at stake, and she had no patience to argue over such things.
"The plate number is Song A1234A, a red Porsche." Fatty Lai gave her his wife's plate number so that Tang Yun would not get into the wrong car, which would only make more trouble.
After hanging up, Fatty Lai called his wife over and told her to take the car and fetch Tang Yun. His wife was puzzled, but she asked no questions; she went to the garage, brought the car out, and drove off toward the hospital. In her eyes, anyone Fatty Lai took so seriously must be someone of consequence.
But no sooner had Fatty Lai hung up on Tang Yun than Wei Zhao's phone rang again.
Fatty Lai picked it up, and the name on the caller ID made him start — for what it read, plain as day, was "Young Miss"!
Who was the Young Miss? Fatty Lai was baffled. But anyone Wei Zhao called Young Miss must be someone of no small standing, so he hurried to answer.
"Wei Zhao, where have you run off to? Why aren't you back so late? My daddy is here!" Ordinarily Gu Mengyao would not pry into Wei Zhao's whereabouts, but today he had slipped away without a word to her, and naturally that put her out a little. Besides, her father had come, meaning to have a meal with Wei Zhao as a way of thanking him for saving her.
Gu Pengzhan was kept busy by company matters, and it was only tonight that he finally found the time. He had told Uncle Qing to have some dishes prepared at the restaurant, intending to share a few drinks with Wei Zhao. But he waited and waited, and Wei Zhao never came back, so he asked Gu Mengyao to phone and inquire.
At any other time Gu Mengyao would simply have told Shen Yushu to make the call, but with her father right there beside her, she made it herself.
Hearing Gu Mengyao's tone, Fatty Lai was startled. Who was this Young Miss, to dare speak to Wei Zhao like that? And who was her daddy, that he could summon Wei Zhao to a meal? Could he be Wei Zhao's superior?
The tone left Fatty Lai quite bewildered, and he had no idea who this Young Miss might be.
"Uh, sorry, I'm not Wei Zhao..." Fatty Lai said cautiously.
"What? You're not Wei Zhao? Then where is Wei Zhao?" Hearing that the person answering was not Wei Zhao, Gu Mengyao asked, puzzled.
"That... may I ask who you are?" Fatty Lai wanted first to establish the Young Miss's identity, and only then consider whether to speak plainly.
"I'm Wei Zhao's... um, I'm... I'm his Boss!" Gu Mengyao thought for a long while, and still could not say just what she and Wei Zhao were to each other, so she came up with the word "Boss." "And who are you?"
When Fatty Lai heard that she was Wei Zhao's Boss, he was startled. Wei Zhao's Boss was none other than the Boss of his own Boss, wasn't she? Fatty Lai said hastily, "Hello, Old Boss!"
"Old Boss? What's that?" Gu Mengyao was baffled.
"Wei Zhao is my Boss, so you are the Boss of my Boss — naturally that makes you the Old Boss!" Fatty Lai explained.
"Oh, I don't care what you are. I'm looking for Wei Zhao." Gu Mengyao was getting rather muddled by Fatty Lai.
"The Boss... he's hurt..." Fatty Lai said. "He's healing his wounds right now..."
"What? Wei Zhao is hurt?" Gu Mengyao's heart jumped. How had Wei Zhao been injured? A tension rose in her for no reason she could name, and she could not help but grow anxious. "What happened? Is it serious?"
"That... I don't know either. He vomited blood earlier... He's in the room healing now, and I don't dare go in..." Fatty Lai answered cautiously. Since the other party was Wei Zhao's Boss, of course he dared not utter a falsehood.
Nor was it any wonder Fatty Lai believed Gu Mengyao's identity outright — after all, the name saved in Wei Zhao's phone was "Young Miss"!
"Vomited blood?!" Gu Mengyao's heart clenched, and a worry unlike any she had ever known surged up in her. She said urgently, "Where are you? I'm coming over right away!"
"Uh... it's so late. Shall I send a car for you?" Fatty Lai dared not be careless; this was, after all, the Boss of his Boss.
"I have a car!" Gu Mengyao cut him off. "Where is it? Tell me quickly!"
"Qianhua Waterfront community, Villa A9-1..." Fatty Lai gave the address of his home.
