Chapter 711 — Specialized in Dealing with Bad Guys

"Why do you call him Arrow-Shield Bro?" Tang Yun did not answer; she asked back instead. She had never quite understood what "Arrow-Shield Bro" meant.

"I call him Arrow-Shield Bro because..." Shen Yushu's words were cut short by Gu Mengyao.

"Ahem, what 'Arrow-Shield Bro' means is that Xiaoshu thinks Wei Zhao is like a shield, shielding us from wind and rain and taking care of our troubles..." Gu Mengyao did not want Shen Yushu to reveal the original meaning of the nickname, because that would be too awkward.

If it came out that she had originally hired Wei Zhao to serve as a shield, then thought him unsuitable and never actually used him as one, Tang Yun would certainly die laughing at her. The more she thought about it, the more Gu Mengyao regretted it. If she had just had Wei Zhao play her boyfriend at school from the start, would Tang Yun ever have had a chance?

And by the same token, Shen Yushu must be the same. The Shen Yushu the young miss saw also seemed to be only a surface. Wei Zhao didn't believe Shen Yushu was really that silly. The feeling he got was that Shen Yushu was smarter than anyone; she just liked living this way every day—joyfully, free of care.

But even though both sisters hid themselves deep, their bond was real, and their care for each other was real. That impressed Wei Zhao deeply. Especially the way Shen Yushu had stayed by Gu Mengyao's side after learning she had fainted, through life and death refusing to leave her—that was something few people could do.

"Now it's your turn. How did you and Arrow-Shield Bro get together?" Shen Yushu went on.

"Wei Zhao and I..." Tang Yun glanced at Wei Zhao. Seeing that he made no move to stop her, she began.

When she thought about what had happened between her and Wei Zhao, it really was rather funny. In the beginning, Wei Zhao probably had no such intentions toward her. It was just that after what she had gone through with Zou Ruoming, she had naturally grown guarded and had lumped Wei Zhao in with the rich young men who were after her.

Then a series of events happened by sheer chance. Wei Zhao helped her out several times, and the relationship between them seemed much closer. But if there was a real emotional breakthrough, it must have been the first time he came to her home, when he encountered Xiaofen about to jump from a building.

Had she begun to like Wei Zhao at that moment? Tang Yun shook her head. She no longer remembered. Somehow, without knowing how, she had simply fallen for him, and then they were together.

Tang Yun told Shen Yushu and Gu Mengyao the story of her and Wei Zhao in a voice that was part monologue, part reminiscence.

Only now did Gu Mengyao understand how helpless and powerless Tang Yun had been when she was being harassed by Zou Ruoming. Given her own status, she had never imagined that a boy's pursuit of a girl could be so vicious, so rotten, so shameless.

At school, aside from being pursued by Zhong Yongliang, Gu Mengyao had never had any other harasser. Everyone knew who she was, and nobody dared to do anything to her. Even with Zhong Yongliang, there was always Shen Yushu tormenting him day after day, so Gu Mengyao had never felt that sense of helpless dread.

Still, she thought, if even a young miss like herself could be kidnapped by Zhong Yongliang, wouldn't someone like Zou Ruoming, faced with Tang Yun, who had no status or backing, have acted even more unscrupulously? If Wei Zhao had not appeared, one could well imagine what would have become of Tang Yun now.

Before this, Gu Mengyao had thought the stories about school bullies and girls being harassed were far away from her—some of them were even just rumors. It was only hearing Tang Yun's account now that she understood: these things had been happening right beside her all along; she had simply never bothered to learn about them.

Thinking about Wei Zhao and Tang Yun, she had to admit it really was a beautiful love story. A hero saving a beauty—nothing could be more clichéd. Yet it was also the eternal, time-honored theme. Wasn't the Legend of the White Snake exactly that?

Having heard Tang Yun's account, Gu Mengyao didn't dislike her as much as before; she even felt some sympathy. But sympathy was sympathy—who would sympathize with her? She had only just gotten the feeling of being cherished and cared for, and she wouldn't allow anyone to take it away.

"Oh? If anyone comes chasing after you in the future, just leave them to me. I guarantee they'll go back with their tail between their legs! Look, two of Sister Yaoyao's suitors have already had their kidneys cut out!" Shen Yushu said. "I specialize in dealing with bad guys!"

Shen Yushu had said it in jest, but Gu Mengyao heard the meaning beneath her words, and she believed Tang Yun did too: there was no need for Wei Zhao—go to her, and she could just as well fend off the harassment of love rivals.

"There's no one left..." Tang Yun also felt that this Shen Yushu wasn't the least bit foolish; she was frighteningly clever, because you could never tell which of her words were true and which were false. A sentence that seemed to be a joke contained a great many hidden meanings.

"Oh, then there's no fun in it..." Shen Yushu sounded disappointed. "Zhong Yongliang is crippled, Zou Ruoming has turned into a coward. From now on, at school I won't know who to mess with."

"Xiaoshu, your job is to study hard, not to mess with people," Gu Mengyao said to Shen Yushu.

"Okay, then I won't mess with anyone. I'll listen to Sister Yaoyao." Shen Yushu nodded, then said to Wei Zhao, "Arrow-Shield Bro, you need to study hard too, or you won't be able to get into the same university as us."

Tang Yun was somewhat speechless. Get into the same university? Were they going to keep Wei Zhao in their clutches forever? Make him their sidekick for the rest of his life?

"Why would you want the same university? To watch him fool around with other girls?" Gu Mengyao frowned and said without thinking. But the instant she finished, she knew it was inappropriate. Tang Yun was sitting right across from her. Wasn't she referring to Wei Zhao and Tang Yun?

Fortunately, before Tang Yun could say anything, Shen Yushu spoke first. "Right, classmate Tang Yun, do you really like Arrow-Shield Bro? Do you want to be together with him for the rest of your life?"
