Chapter 821 — The Xiao Family's Own
"Fine! You just wait and see! Just you all wait!" Gou Huli was out of options. To linger any longer would only heap more ridicule on her head. What if Wei Zhao and the others paid up in a moment and demanded she perform the head-twisting trick?
How could Gou Huli possibly stand there and let that happen? So she flung down one last vicious threat, turned on her heel, and made to leave.
"Hold on. We still haven't paid you for the clothes," Wei Zhao said, calling her back.
"Keep the clothes! I'll let you off cheap! But mark my words, all of you — I will not let this matter rest!" Gou Huli said through her teeth.
"You don't want them? That's fine. But you've seen for yourself now that we can buy a dress identical to yours. Don't you still owe us something?" Wei Zhao said mildly.
"Oh, oh! Come on, do the head-twisting! Everyone, come watch! This old woman is going to twist her own head off in public — better than the clowns in the zoo circus!" Shen Yushu shouted.
"I'm not taking the clothes, so what performance?" Gou Huli glared at Shen Yushu. "I'll remember you too. You just wait! Next time we'll settle accounts slowly!"
With that, ignoring Wei Zhao and Shen Yushu, Gou Huli turned and strode off toward the elevators.
"Letting her go?" Wei Zhao looked at Gu Mengyao.
"Let it be. Someone like that isn't worth arguing with," Gu Mengyao said, shaking her head. Clearly she had no wish to press the attack.
Wei Zhao shrugged. Since the eldest daughter had spoken, he would say no more. To him, Gou Huli was nothing but a buffoon capering on a stage. Still, from what she had let slip, her man seemed to have some influence — though whether that was boasting or the truth, he could not tell.
"So boring. Some old women just trade on their age and have no shame. She clearly agreed to twist her head off, and now she's going back on it." Shen Yushu was bored; she would not get to see the head-twisting after all.
Gou Huli stumbled and nearly went sprawling, and even so she twisted her ankle. She was grinding her teeth with rage. She had meant to bide her time and plan carefully, but now she could endure it no longer — she had to vent this fury!
Once inside the elevator, Gou Huli took out her phone and dialed her man's number.
"Darling, I've barely arrived in Songshan City and I've already been bullied! They soaked me from head to toe with water pistols, refused to pay for my clothes, and then humiliated me, demanding I twist my own head off for them to watch!" Gou Huli, the wrongdoer lodging her complaint first, said: "And one of them called me an old woman. Your wife is so young and beautiful — how am I an old woman?"
"What exactly happened? Who are these people?" The man on the other end frowned. But he knew well enough what sort of person his wife was, and did not simply take her word: "If you hadn't provoked them, why would they bully you? What happened? Tell me the truth! Don't make things up — do you think I don't know you?"
"Hmph! Just two little maids and a gardener. They were fooling around with water pistols in the villa. I'd only just bought us a villa and was going to take a look — I'd just driven into the villa district when they drenched me from head to face..." Seeing that her husband did not believe her, Gou Huli had no choice but to sob out the truth: "I thought, doesn't our house need some workers to clean it? So I wanted them to do a month of free cleaning for us, and I threatened them into paying for my clothes. But they agreed to it..."
"Then why do you say they humiliated you?" the man snorted.
"How could a few servants like them ever afford my clothes? You know all my clothes are bought from the exclusive counter at Pengzhan Plaza, and when I bought this one, apart from the display piece in the window, there was only the last one left!" Gou Huli explained: "I was sure they could never buy it! So I made a bet with them — if they could buy it, I'd twist my head off; if they couldn't, they'd have to do a month of hard labor for us..."
"And they bought it, didn't they?" The man was somewhat speechless. How could she say such things so carelessly? And promise to twist her head off for them to see?
"Yes! Who'd have thought a few servants would each have a diamond membership card to Pengzhan Plaza? Their masters must treat them well!" Gou Huli said, disgruntled. "But so what if they have membership cards? I thought, even with a hundred membership cards, if the goods are sold out, they still couldn't buy a dress identical to mine! But then they went there, showed a membership card, and a Manager Wang actually appeared, ready to sell them the goods from the window display! I was furious. Who knows what got into that Manager Wang, siding with a few slaves!"
"Slaves? Servants?" The man was instantly furious with Gou Huli. "Do you have any brains at all? How could a few little maids and a gardener have diamond membership cards? As far as I know, you only got that diamond card of yours as a courtesy because our family is an old established house. And a few little maids have diamond cards?"
"Because their masters treat them well?" Gou Huli did not quite follow him.
"Masters? Did you even look properly? Those people are obviously not simple! Could you get a diamond card for your own maid? At most you'd get an ordinary membership card!" the man raged. "They all have diamond cards, and they even know the manager of the plaza — obviously they are the owners of the villa! You've only just arrived and you've already clashed with the neighbors? Those three clearly have real influence locally. How could you not see even that?"
"Huh? Surely not?" Gou Huli was stunned. "But they were all dressed in rags, and who ever heard of a villa owner cleaning his own house?"
"Cleaning can be a way to exercise, or simply because one has nothing better to do! When the old man of our family was alive, he still went out to the fields to plant vegetables — would you call him a servant?" the man said angrily. "You fool, you've barely arrived and you've already made enemies!"
"Hmph! So what? At most they're a few local rich second-generation brats — judging by their ages, none of them are very old! And besides, even if their fathers came, before our Xiao family of Yanjing they'd be nothing! Xiao Ji, I've been bullied like this and you won't stand up for me? Then I might as well be dead! I've been with you since I was eighteen, all these years, and only after your wife died did you make me your proper wife. Haven't I suffered enough? And now that I'm bullied, all you do is scold me. Boo hoo, I don't want to live!" Gou Huli put on a show of weeping.
