Chapter 968 — A Slip of the Tongue
Only when Tang Yun got into the car or stepped out of it would the young mistress give her a greeting. Cool as it was, the hostility of before had faded; it was more like the nod exchanged between ordinary acquaintances.
Tang Yun found the young mistress's manner baffling. In the past, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had always shown her an inexplicable hostility the moment they laid eyes on her—yet now they seemed to treat her as nothing more than an ordinary friend?
Had they begun to look down on her, no longer counting her a rival? Or had they given up on Wei Zhao? If it was the former, Tang Yun felt she still could not afford to lower her guard; but if it was the latter, she found it strange in its own way. If they did not care for Wei Zhao, then this four-person arrangement of theirs was really a bit too bizarre.
In truth, Tang Yun simply did not understand the young mistress's character. Gu Mengyao had always been cold without and warm within; her acceptance of a person moved from indifference toward warmth. Even now her manner toward Wei Zhao remained neither warm nor cold, and yet in her heart she had come to regard him as a friend she could not afford to lose.
Gu Mengyao did not know what to say to Tang Yun, and with Wei Zhao there, she truly could not say much. She wanted to try to get closer to Tang Yun, only to find that the two of them lived in entirely different worlds.
The affairs of Tang Yun's family were things the young mistress had never known, and the affairs of her own family were things Gu Mengyao had no wish to speak of—that would only smack of showing off before Tang Yun.
After two days of it, even Wei Zhao found the whole thing awkward. In the car he wanted to say something to Tang Yun, but the thought of the young mistress watching from the back seat kept him silent; and the young mistress, seemingly constrained by Tang Yun's presence up front, spoke even less to Xiaoshu than usual.
Before, the young mistress and Xiaoshu would talk of anything under the sun, and since both were well off, talk of newly released styles of clothing and cosmetics came naturally enough. Now, though, the young mistress seemed deliberately to steer clear of such subjects.
Luckily, after two days of Wei Zhao's treatment, Uncle Qing's body had recovered as good as new. Only his external cultivation was gone; it did not hinder his movement.
The duties of full-time driver fell to Uncle Qing once more, which drew a long breath of relief from Wei Zhao.
On the expressway from Yanjing to Songshan City, a black Audi with special plates sped along at full tilt.
Inside, a middle-aged man and a young woman were conversing. These two were father and daughter: Feng Tianlong and Feng Xiaoxiao.
"I am never going back there again!" Feng Xiaoxiao's face was written all over with displeasure. "So much time wasted, and they still couldn't find out a thing. How many more years like this do I have left to live?"
"Xiaoxiao, you ought to have faith in modern medicine. Look here—this is the report from when you first arrived in Yanjing, and this is the one from the day we left. Your condition has clearly improved, if only a little..." Feng Tianlong said, pointing at the reports.
"Improved? And was it they who cured me? Every single day all they do is draw my blood, draw my blood—can blood draws alone make a person better?" Feng Xiaoxiao curled her lip. "I had an attack while I was there, you know. If not for Wei Zhao, I would have died long ago."
"Wei Zhao..." At the name, Feng Tianlong's gaze sharpened a fraction. As the head of one of the most secretive intelligence departments, he was perfectly well informed about all that had lately happened in Songshan City.
Wei Zhao had actually crossed swords with the illegitimate sons of the Yu, Xiao, and Zhao families. Though the death of Yu Bide and the madness of Uncle Pi were not directly his doing, he had brought them about all the same. His enmity with the Yu, Xiao, and Zhao families was sealed.
And what interested Feng Tianlong most was this: after being gravely wounded, Wei Zhao had been able to recover swiftly and restore his strength—and the dog at his side the same. There must, then, be an extraordinarily skilled physician at Wei Zhao's side.
The intelligence Feng Tianlong possessed was naturally the most complete and detailed to be had, yet even he had failed to discover who had healed Wei Zhao's wounds and helped him regain his strength. In that interval Wei Zhao had paid a visit to Guan Xuemin's home, but only after his injuries were already healed; so the odds that the man was Guan Xuemin were not great.
Earlier, Feng Tianlong had supposed this person to be Guan Xuemin. His accompanying Feng Xiaoxiao back to Songshan City this time was in part a hope of meeting Guan Xuemin and begging from him a Longevity Detox Pill, to see whether it might cure Xiaoxiao's illness. But after these events, Feng Tianlong felt that the Longevity Detox Pill was most likely not Guan Xuemin's creation either.
If Guan Xuemin could produce such miraculous medicines, he would have produced them long ago—why wait until now? And besides, why was it that anything and everything touching Wei Zhao turned strange and mysterious?
At that auction, after all, Wei Zhao had been present as well.
Wei Zhao had once assisted his squad on a mission, but at the time Wei Zhao was an outside helper, his identity confidential by its very nature. Feng Tianlong was a man who knew the rules, and he did not pry into Wei Zhao's affairs.
Now, for his daughter's sake, Feng Tianlong had no choice but to seek Wei Zhao out and ask him a few things... And besides, there was another meaning buried in this as well...
His daughter, it seemed, was rather fond of Wei Zhao?
"You had an attack while you were in Yanjing? How is it I never knew?" Feng Tianlong turned to look at his daughter. "A thing that serious, and you said nothing to me?"
"It wasn't so very bad, really. I was taking a shower when I suddenly fainted. Luckily Wei Zhao found me in time. I don't know what he did, but I came around quickly enough..." Feng Xiaoxiao had kept silent earlier for fear of worrying her father; the matter had not been grave, and she had come to no harm, so she had said nothing of it.
"You were taking a shower, and Wei Zhao was there with you?" Feng Tianlong was startled.
"Huh?" Feng Xiaoxiao abruptly realized she had let something slip. Her face flushed crimson on the spot, and she said awkwardly, "No, nothing like that... I just... I just... anyway, it's not what you're imagining!"
For the first time, Xiaoxiao found herself stammering incoherently before her father, like a child caught in some misdeed, waving her hands about, not even knowing what she was saying.
"Haha, Xiaoxiao, there's no need to rush to deny it." Feng Tianlong only smiled and waved a hand, cutting off his daughter's protests. "I'm not such an unenlightened man, after all. And I've told you before—I would be all for you finding a boyfriend. If the two of you were to give me a grandson or a granddaughter, why, that would be best of all..."
