Chapter 1043 — A Cake Made with Love

The Blossom Guardian

Only after they reached the teaching building, and Tang Yun had slipped into the classroom of Senior Three, Class Nine, did Feng Xiaoxiao let herself grow a little closer to Wei Zhao. The classroom was just ahead and the corridor was nearly empty, so she stopped holding back and reached out her hand in front of him.

"?" Wei Zhao blinked, mildly taken aback. "What are you doing?"

"Holding hands! When the first wife was here I didn't fight for anything. Now that she's gone, can't I get a little better treatment?" Feng Xiaoxiao said urgently. "Quick, quick, it's my turn."

"Heh..." Wei Zhao smiled and took her hand. Though it was only a few steps to the door of Senior Three, Class Five, he let her go the moment they arrived.

Even so short a distance was enough to delight Feng Xiaoxiao. Humming a little tune, she followed Wei Zhao into the classroom in high spirits, and only after he had sat down did she settle quietly beside him like a demure young bride.

Seeing how easily the girl was satisfied, Wei Zhao felt all the more how pitiable she was — yet he could do nothing about it. His medical skill was not enough; he could not keep Feng Xiaoxiao alive...

"Husband Wei Zhao, I brought you something delicious!" The instant she sat down, Feng Xiaoxiao unzipped her schoolbag in high excitement and began talking to herself.

"Oh?" Wei Zhao had genuinely come to like Feng Xiaoxiao from the bottom of his heart — which was exactly why he had not been angry in the least when she lied to him earlier about the car running out of gas. In the old days he would never have indulged her so.

"Love pastries, made by my own hands!" Feng Xiaoxiao rummaged proudly through her schoolbag, then produced a food-storage bag. "Here they are — ta-da-da-daaa — love pastries... eh?"

She had been dying to show Wei Zhao the love pastries she had made, but when she pulled them out she saw that the cake in the bag had been flattened. That heart-shaped confection, garnished with cherries and strawberries, had been crushed beyond all recognition!

"Aaaah!" Feng Xiaoxiao was about to go out of her mind. "I got up at three this morning to make them — how could this happen! I'm the unluckiest person alive!"

She slapped her forehead, somewhat dejected. After baking the love pastries that morning she had felt drowsy, so she had dropped them straight into her schoolbag and then fallen into bed in a haze. Once asleep she knew nothing of it, and used the schoolbag as a pillow!

The pastries were still in the bag, and with her lying on them the outcome could be imagined. It was simply that after waking Feng Xiaoxiao had forgotten all about it. She got up, called Tang Yun, dressed herself, slung her bag over her shoulder and left.

She had forgotten using the bag as a pillow, and never once imagined that the carefully made love pastries had already been crushed to ruin by her own weight.

Wei Zhao looked at Feng Xiaoxiao before him, and was truly happy, truly moved.

Feng Xiaoxiao had written on her phone as well that she wanted to make him fall in love with her and then die before his very eyes — that would achieve her revenge. But Wei Zhao no longer believed those words of hers. If it were all nothing but a lie, who would get up in the middle of the night to bake love pastries?

"Forget it — I'll throw them away and make them again tomorrow. This time I'll use a storage container. Yes, a fall, a lesson learned!" Feng Xiaoxiao said glumly. "I'm such an idiot: I put them in my bag and then slept on it as a pillow... sigh!"

"Ha ha!" Hearing this, Wei Zhao could not help being amused by her, and burst out laughing.

"You're still laughing!" Feng Xiaoxiao pursed her lips.

"Why throw it away? It's only deformed, not spoiled." Wei Zhao took the bag from her hand, opened it, and stuffed the cake inside straight into his mouth. "I haven't eaten anything this morning and I'm rather hungry — not bad, actually!"

In three or four bites Wei Zhao finished off the pastries Feng Xiaoxiao had made, utterly indifferent to their shape or appearance.

"Huh?" Feng Xiaoxiao had never expected Wei Zhao simply to eat them, and froze for an instant.

"Any more?" Wei Zhao asked when he had finished.

"Uh... no. I'll make more tomorrow." Feng Xiaoxiao brightened at once, and as her gaze rested on Wei Zhao it grew softer still. Wei Zhao was moved — and was Feng Xiaoxiao any less so?

Crushed into that state, Feng Xiaoxiao herself would never have eaten them. Yet Wei Zhao had eaten them without a second thought, and when he was done even asked whether she had any more. It convinced her that Wei Zhao was truly, truly good to her. From childhood until now, no one had ever been this good to her; she had never known romance either. To fall headlong into love so suddenly made everything seem so beautiful! If it were possible, she really did not want to die...

She had grown a little afraid. The further things went with Wei Zhao, the heavier Feng Xiaoxiao's heart became. If this continued, the final parting between life and death would surely be unbearable. She did not want it — she did not want to suffer, and still less did she want Wei Zhao to suffer!

The reason she had never made friends or taken a lover before was her fear of grieving on that last day. But now everything had changed. Without quite realizing it, she had friends — Tang Yun and Shen Yushu were, by any measure, good friends to her — and she had a lover, too. Feng Xiaoxiao could feel it: she and Wei Zhao were walking toward danger, and both of them were ever more deeply drawn in...

Sigh — what on earth was she to do? Feng Xiaoxiao's head ached.

Wei Zhao, for his part, had not thought so deeply. He finished the pastries, washed them down with a couple of mouthfuls of water, then casually tossed the bag into the trash bin a short way off.

"You don't need to get up so early to make these; it's far too much trouble." Wei Zhao was worried about Feng Xiaoxiao's body. She did not have many days left in this world, and to be getting up in the dead of night to bake pastries — was she not simply waiting for her condition to worsen?

"It's no trouble; I'm perfectly happy!" Feng Xiaoxiao shook her head. "Tonight I'll prepare everything, and in the morning I'll only have to bake them. It was only this morning, with nothing ready and everything done on the spot, that it became such a bother..."

Seeing how insistent Feng Xiaoxiao was, Wei Zhao said no more about it. Whatever the effort, it made her happy, and Wei Zhao was glad enough to let her be happy.

"Friday night, the racing event — have you made contact?" Wei Zhao changed the subject.

"Mm, I have!" At the mention of racing, Feng Xiaoxiao perked up again. "I got in touch with the people I used to run with and signed us up! But whatever you do, don't lose — I can't afford to pay two hundred thousand!"

"Heh — don't you trust my skills?" Wei Zhao did not take this sort of grassroots racing event seriously at all.

"It's my car I have no confidence in..." Feng Xiaoxiao said with a bitter smile. "Their cars have all been modified; ours has a small displacement and isn't tuned in the least."
