Chapter 1194 — Brothers Talk Heart to Heart
Yu Xiaoke was taken aback. She had never imagined that Wei Zhao could actually heal the sick, and she asked, a little puzzled, "You... are a doctor?"
"Didn't I treat you the last time you were hurt?" Wei Zhao smiled.
"Last time... wasn't it your true qi you used to heal me?" Yu Xiaoke blinked. "Isn't that something else entirely?"
"I'm a doctor too," Wei Zhao said, still smiling.
As a matter of fact, Wei Zhao could simply have given Yu Xiaoke some money and let her take Xiaoyan to the hospital herself; tetanus was no great problem for modern medicine. But he also wanted to see whether Yu Xiaoke had been lying to him.
He was rather inclined to believe her, but Yu Xiaoke was a thief after all, and the two of them were hardly well acquainted. He could not be certain that everything she said was true, and doing it this way would also let him help Er Gou Dan find out once and for all whether Yu Xiaoke was a swindler or not.
Of course, if everything Yu Xiaoke had said was true, then he might as well lend her a hand. Whether he had been moved by her dogged spirit, or whether, with the passage of his days in the world, he had been assimilated by the people around him, that old indifference of his had quietly begun to give way.
And Wei Zhao made no deliberate effort to resist or check that shift in himself. If he wanted to be part of this life, he had to let himself adapt to it.
"Then... thank you!" Hearing him say so, Yu Xiaoke did not doubt his words in the least.
"You're welcome." Wei Zhao smiled and turned to Er Gou Dan. "Shall we go and have a look together?"
"Sure!" Er Gou Dan wanted just as much to see whether Yu Xiaoke really was a swindler. If she truly was, it would be soon enough to teach her a lesson; if she was not, then he had wronged her, and that would set his heart a little easier — at the very least, his kindness would have been repaid somehow.
"Brother Arrow, I want to come too!" Shen Yushu had heard what Yu Xiaoke said earlier as well, and she wanted to see what an orphanage was like.
"Then we'll all go." Wei Zhao did not object. Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu might not be extravagant with money, but their sense of what it meant was exceedingly thin; letting them see how the children in an orphanage lived would be an instructive thing indeed. "Er Gou Dan and I will drive Xiaoshu's Beetle. Xiaoke, how about you ride in one car with Yao Yao and Xiaoshu?"
Wei Zhao and Er Gou Dan had not seen each other for a long while and naturally had things to say that they did not want overheard, so he suggested that Gu Mengyao and the others ride in a separate car.
"All right." Gu Mengyao nodded, and she went with Shen Yushu and Yu Xiaoke to the Audi S5.
The two cars filed out of the villa, Wei Zhao in front and Gu Mengyao following behind.
"That Yu Yuanyuan — is she the girl you like?" Wei Zhao had caught a hint of something in Er Gou Dan's tone earlier, and now there was time to ask. "How did you two meet?"
"Heh heh..." Er Gou Dan scratched his head, a little embarrassed. "You saw right through me after all, Boss. I like her a lot. I want to take her back and make her my wife..."
"Oh?" Wei Zhao had not expected Er Gou Dan to be in earnest, truly meaning to marry Yu Yuanyuan, and he could not help being curious. "You've only been here a few days. What on earth happened?"
"That's a long story..." Er Gou Dan concealed nothing from Wei Zhao. He began with being cheated out of his money by Yu Xiaoke at the train station, then getting hungry and going to Yu Yuanyuan's burger shop, hearing from her about the trouble she had run into — and so going off to beat up Master Li...
"Cough, cough!" Hearing of Er Gou Dan's past few days, Wei Zhao coughed in sheer astonishment. This was too incredible. Er Gou Dan had actually gone to an underground fight ring and beaten the Master Li who presided there to death? Though Master Li was unlucky enough too, running into Er Gou Dan.
"That underground fight ring — they haven't come after you again?" Wei Zhao asked, rather surprised.
"No. They even sent someone over with a sum of money," Er Gou Dan said, shaking his head.
Wei Zhao nodded, seeing nothing amiss in it. They had simply been beaten into terror. Sure enough, it takes a wicked man to wear down a wicked man.
"And then Yu's mother was bitten by a lion at Gou Huli's house, and you came here looking for revenge?" Wei Zhao asked.
"That's right. I never expected to run into you here, Boss!" Er Gou Dan grew excited as he said this.
"And what does Yu Yuanyuan think? Does she like you?" Wei Zhao knew this was the first time Er Gou Dan had ever lost his heart to a girl, and he did not want to see him hurt; Yu Yuanyuan's own feelings, then, mattered a great deal.
"She should like me..." Er Gou Dan thought it over carefully, then nodded. "And Yuanyuan's parents have both been very good to me. Yuanyuan's father even wants me to stay here and help him run the hardware and sundries shop..."
"But can you leave Xixing Mountain Village? Can you leave that spirit spring? In the end you still have to go back." Wei Zhao frowned in warning. "Can Yu Yuanyuan go back with you?"
"She... I don't know..." Er Gou Dan was startled by Wei Zhao's words as well. He had not thought that far before, but hearing it put this way, he remembered the peculiarity of his body — he could not leave that spirit spring, or there would be serious trouble.
That Yu Yuanyuan liked him, Er Gou Dan could be fairly sure of. But to ask a girl to travel so far, to give up the splendor of the great city and go off to a tiny mountain village — that really was asking too much of her. Having seen the splendor of the great city for himself, even Er Gou Dan was a little reluctant to leave; how much more so Yu Yuanyuan?
And so Er Gou Dan found himself torn.
"Find a chance to talk with her. This is something that has to be brought out into the open in the end." Wei Zhao knew that laying it all bare might cost Er Gou Dan his chance at Yu Yuanyuan — but it might also win him that love. Yet if he did not, muddling along was no solution either. "You've already used your strength twice, haven't you? Without the nourishment of the spirit spring water, the Gu worms inside you will turn on you. I'm afraid you won't hold out long this time."
"Yes..." Er Gou Dan sighed as well. "I'll find a time to tell her."
Wei Zhao nodded silently. In such matters he could only hint and go no further; there was little more he could say. Everything depended on how Yu Yuanyuan and Er Gou Dan felt about each other. Thinking of Yu Yuanyuan, Wei Zhao could not help thinking of Tang Yun — that girl of a certain stubbornness and persistence.
When he was about to leave Songshan City, Tang Yun had resolutely chosen to give up everything and go with him. In that moment Wei Zhao had truly been moved, and he swore that he would treat her well all his life. Thinking back carefully over the little moments the two of them had walked through together, he found it a little plain, perhaps, but very happy.
Sometimes lovers need not go through too many twists and turns together; the plain and the ordinary is what is most beautiful of all.
