Chapter 1289 — The Prediction Came True Again. Xu Shilan Was No Fool—On the Contrary, She Was a Clever Girl, and Having Made Her Way Alone Through the Entertainment Circle for So Many Years, She Had to Keep a Clear Head and a Calm, Even Temper; So It Was Only Briefly That Anger Clouded Her Mind Before She Cooled Down!
The man before her was clearly no ordinary person! She had been in such agony earlier that she fainted. This had happened before, and every time she passed out from the pain, when she woke it was usually the next day — she had never come to this easily!
Yet the man before her had brought her back to her senses with nothing but a few silver needles and some massage and acupressure, and her head no longer ached — there was not even a trace of pain. It was more effective than Medicine King Zhao's miracle drugs!
And what shocked Xu Shilan most was that the man actually knew how to seal acupoints! Whether that was what it was called, Xu Shilan was not quite sure — it was what they called it in martial arts shows, anyway. Wei Zhao had merely pressed a few spots on her body at random, and she could neither move nor speak. Xu Shilan could only conclude that Wei Zhao knew how to seal acupoints!
Acupuncture, massage, acupressure — those might shock Xu Shilan, but she would only take the man for a skilled physician. Knowing how to seal acupoints, though, was something far beyond a mere skilled physician. Could it be that Wei Zhao was also a man of the martial world?
And yet even among martial artists, those who could seal acupoints were exceedingly rare, were they not? Xu Shilan was no cultivator herself, but her guard Feng Sanhuang was! Though she did not know what level he had reached, she had learned a fair amount about martial cultivators from his mouth. There were those among them with the skill to fight — but sealing acupoints... she had never so much as heard of it.
Seeing that there was not a trace of lewdness or lust in the man's eyes, Xu Shilan knew that what he said was most likely true. The eyes are the windows to the soul; and an actress like Xu Shilan, so skilled at acting, understood all the better what a look in the eyes could mean. The man before her truly had no interest in her, Xu Shilan — it was not merely talk.
He was different from Zhao Qibing. When Zhao Qibing looked at her, his eyes carried desire, carried lust. Wei Zhao's did not. When he looked at her, there was not even the worship and excitement of a fan for a star — he looked at her as though she were just an ordinary person.
Perhaps everything this man said was true: his girlfriend was prettier than she was, and he had saved her only so that his girlfriend could go on watching the concert. So Xu Shilan nodded.
Even so, Xu Shilan was filled with resentment toward Wei Zhao. She ought to have been grateful to him, yet somehow she could not summon an ounce of gratitude. Women are strange creatures — that saying was not wrong at all. That Wei Zhao, unlike Zhao Qibing, was not obsessed with her and did not scheme after her did let Xu Shilan breathe a sigh of relief; but that he had no interest in her whatsoever, and even said she was not as pretty as his girlfriend, made Xu Shilan very unhappy.
She was, after all, a great star watched by millions, doted on and adored by all — and he did not take her seriously at all? He must be blind! And the reason he gave for saving her was truly ridiculous, which left her even less inclined to feel grateful. Yet in her heart, for reasons she could not name, she felt a little envy toward Wei Zhao's girlfriend.
To have such a boyfriend — that was her good fortune.
Seeing Xu Shilan nod, Wei Zhao released the hand covering her mouth and said coolly, "Are you well now? If you are, then hurry back out and keep singing. No need to thank me — if you want to thank me, then after you finish singing, take a photo with my girlfriend and consider the debt repaid."
Hearing this, Xu Shilan did not know whether to laugh or cry. She had never even said she wanted to repay him, all right? With that attitude, and he still expected repayment? Hmph! Xu Shilan was furious. But angry as she was, Xu Shilan was not one to forget a kindness. However you looked at it, Wei Zhao's treatment had helped her through a great difficulty. What his original intent had been did not matter; what mattered was that Xu Shilan had benefited.
So almost without thinking, she nodded and agreed — partly to repay Wei Zhao, and partly because afterward, when there was time to spare, she wanted to question him in detail about whether he could cure her illness.
In her view, Wei Zhao had a way. His medical skill was probably higher than Medicine King Zhao's, and the crucial thing was that Wei Zhao harbored none of those thoughts about her, so Xu Shilan felt quite at ease dealing with him and letting him treat her illness.
"Sure! This is my cell number. After the concert ends, call me and I'll send someone to pick you two up!" Xu Shilan nodded quickly, rattled off a string of digits, and then ran out of the restroom. Her time was terribly tight — she had to touch up her makeup and go back onstage — so she had no leisure for further pleasantries with Wei Zhao.
Something had gone wrong with the stage equipment, and the fans were all anxious; yet some people were delighted, and one of them was Su Jiaonang. The very first thing he did was call Zhao Qibing again.
"Young Master Bing, good news!" Su Jiaonang said excitedly.
"What good news? Xu Shilan agreed?" Zhao Qibing asked, startled.
"Xu Shilan had a flare-up onstage. To the public they're saying something about the stage equipment malfunctioning, but the way I see it, eight to one it's that headache of hers acting up again!" Su Jiaonang said. "I'm going to take the Medicine King's medicine and go find Wang Jingji, and ask her one more time whether she'll agree to Young Master Bing's request!"
"Haha! Good — striking when someone is down, I like it!" Zhao Qibing was also delighted to hear this; it was practically a gift from heaven! So he said, "Then get over there right now. The moment you have good news, report back to me at once!"
On his way upstairs, Wei Zhao happened to pass the restroom on the first floor, and so overheard the phone call between Su Jiaonang and Zhao Qibing. An amused smile flickered at the corner of his mouth. It seemed Zhao Qibing's plan was about to fall through after all? Wei Zhao had no particular feelings about whether Zhao Qibing coveted Xu Shilan, but spoiling one of Zhao Qibing's plans by accident still felt very satisfying.
Stepping out of the corridor and back to his earlier seat in the VIP section, he watched the stage slowly rise again and smiled. Xu Shilan was probably about to make her reappearance.
"Hubby Wei Zhao, you're back! The stage suddenly broke down just now — you left at exactly the right time, you hardly missed any of the good show, and the moment you got back it started up again. You're so lucky!" Feng Xiaoxiao said when she saw Wei Zhao return.
"Yeah, what a coincidence! If I didn't know that Arrow-Brand Bro and Xu Shilan have never met, I'd have thought the two of them had arranged to slip off backstage for a tryst!" Shen Yushu said as well.
Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback, and thought to himself that Shen Yushu was formidable — to guess it dead-on with one offhand remark?
