Chapter 1711 — Aren't You Leaving Yet?
Yu Shuixing meant to remain rooted to the spot, just as he had after trading fists with Wei Zhao earlier. Otherwise, how humiliating would it be if he were sent flying?
But Yu Shuixing had made things far too simple in his mind. This was no longer a question of humiliation. As the true qi bomb burst, its violent shockwave blasted Yu Shuixing into the air. And because he had stubbornly remained where he was, trying to withstand Wei Zhao's true qi bomb, the result was all the more dreadful. He had taken the full force of the explosion.
Had he allowed himself to be carried away by the first blast, he would at most have been injured. The true qi within the bomb Wei Zhao had condensed was not particularly great; constrained by time, Wei Zhao had formed only a medium-sized true qi bomb. At worst, it could have left Yu Shuixing lightly wounded, allowing Wei Zhao to press his advantage and strike while he was down.
But Yu Shuixing's resistance had turned his position into the very center of the explosion. The tremendous force tore a gaping hole through his chest. His breastbone was blasted into dust, while his internal organs were reduced to a chaotic mass of bloody fragments.
Yu Shuixing did not even have time to scream before he toppled stiffly to the ground, killed by Wei Zhao's true qi bomb. A colossal bloody cavity yawned in his chest, still gurgling blood. The sight was horrifying.
The dramatic turn of events left everyone present stunned. They had gone from initially believing in Wei Zhao, to losing faith in him, and then to watching Yu Shuixing die a gruesome death, all in the space of a few moments. None of them could quite adjust to it.
Of course, they were shocked, but Wei Zhao was even more so. What shocked him was that Yu Shuixing had actually died. His true qi bomb should, at most, have blasted him away. At worst, it should have left him lightly injured. It absolutely should not have killed him.
As long as Yu Shuixing had been wounded, Wei Zhao would have had a chance of finishing him off, provided he maneuvered carefully. But Yu Shuixing had neither dodged nor evaded. He had gritted his teeth and stood there, only to get himself killed by the blast?
"He's dead just like that?" Wei Zhao walked over and glanced at Yu Shuixing on the floor. The man was beyond dead. A huge cavity gaped in his chest, and his heart and everything else inside had been shattered to pieces. If he could still be alive after that, it would truly be a miracle.
Wei Zhao's words were met by silence throughout the arena. No one dared pass judgment on him now. Even though the question had sounded somewhat absurd, nobody found it amusing. Yu Shuixing had been killed by Wei Zhao; that was a stark, undeniable fact. Who would dare provoke Wei Zhao at a time like this?
An Jianwen had been watching Wei Zhao from the moment he entered the arena. Only after Wei Zhao killed Yu Shuixing did An Jianwen let out a long sigh, realizing that his defeat had been entirely justified. Wei Zhao was actually an early Earth Stage master. Naturally, dealing with the fake Wei Zhao had been child's play for him.
Moreover, An Jianwen had underestimated this opponent from the very beginning. At first, he had regarded Wei Zhao as nothing more than a rogue cultivator and bodyguard who had trained out in some rural backwater. In his eyes, Wei Zhao and the great families belonged to entirely different worlds; a few minor tricks should have been more than enough to deal with him.
But after witnessing Wei Zhao's prowess today, An Jianwen finally understood that those little tricks would never be enough. If he wanted to deal with Wei Zhao in the future, he would need methods far more formidable than that.
"It's all over..." Wei Zhao let out a sigh. His only regret was that he had still failed to learn where Pangolin was. But he also understood that even if Yu Shuixing had survived, he would never have remembered anything about Pangolin.
In his eyes, Pangolin had been no more than a minor figure. Why would he have paid attention to such a matter? Since Yu Shuixing was dead, Wei Zhao considered it revenge for Pangolin all the same.
Wei Zhao strode toward the conference table and sat directly in the seat of honor where Yu Shuixing had been sitting. He swept his gaze over the various family heads around the table. Under his scrutiny, they grew uneasy and lowered their heads, not daring to meet his eyes. Only Elder Liu Zhenhu gave Wei Zhao a friendly nod.
The atmosphere in the conference room grew strange. Everyone had come to attend the great families' gathering hosted by the Yu family, but now that the Yu family head was dead, there was no reason for the gathering to continue. And yet not one person dared be the first to rise and leave. Who knew whether this ominous killer, Wei Zhao, might suddenly turn on them?
If he had dared kill even Yu Shuixing, who else would he hesitate to kill?
"The Four Great Families and the Five Lesser Families. Now there are only eight left." Wei Zhao looked around the people at the conference table, his gaze finally settling on Divine Physician Kang.
Divine Physician Kang had long since lost his composure. He sat as if on a bed of needles. He and Wei Zhao were old enemies, after all; they had fallen out at the birthday banquet long ago. He had not the slightest doubt that Wei Zhao would dare kill him on the spot.
"Divine Physician Kang, what are you still sitting here for? Get out." Wei Zhao glanced at him and spoke in an even tone.
"I... I will leave at once..." Divine Physician Kang rose as though pardoned from a death sentence and hurried to leave with Kang Guifeng. He no longer had any thought of elevating his family to the rank of a great family. To preserve his life was already blessing enough.
"Wait. Take your in-laws, the Xiao family, with you. The lot of you can get out together." Wei Zhao pointed toward the two Xiao brothers.
Xiao Ji and Xiao Ben had long been Wei Zhao's adversaries. But even the reclusive Pi family had not dared make trouble for Wei Zhao. What right did the two of them have to question his orders? They exchanged a glance, then rose from their seats with their tails between their legs.
"An Jianwen, do I really need to call your name?" Wei Zhao said, glancing toward An Jianwen and An Mingyue.
"Wei Zhao, we've always gotten along well. Have you forgotten? When I was pursuing Gu Mengyao, you were the one who gave me most of my advice," An Jianwen asked, feigning sincerity.
"From this day forward, the Four Great Families and the Five Lesser Families are history!" Wei Zhao did not answer An Jianwen. Instead, he said, "The old order of the great families no longer exists. I intend to reorganize everything. But An Jianwen, I have no place for you in it."
"Forget it. Our An family has never been good at cultivation. Even when we were counted among the great families, we were only there to make up the numbers. Since that is what you want, Wei Zhao, our An family will leave." An Jianwen understood the wisdom of not provoking a man while he held the upper hand. He rose and prepared to depart.
To tell the truth, An Jianwen did not care about the title of a great family in the slightest. The An family was currently occupied with helping the Fire Wolf Gang, and whether or not they carried that title made no difference.
