Chapter 2656 — His Sleeve Caught Fire
In truth, Zhong Yongliang was only going through the motions of the martial technique; he could not yet channel it, but he could imitate the form and put on a show. Otherwise, if Wei Zhao collapsed on the stage, he would have no move to fall back on.
"Little Liangzi?" When Shen Yushu arrived and found that Zhong Yongliang really was practicing martial arts, she was puzzled for a moment. Had this thing been passed down to him after all? How had he turned into a **practitioner?
"Oh, Little Shu, you're here?" Zhong Yongliang stopped his martial arts practice and called out to Gao Xiaofu: "Xiaofu, go buy a few bottles of drinks..."
This was what they had agreed on beforehand. Gao Xiaofu would spray some lure agent on the drink bottles, and in this way they could entice the Hundred-Drunk Centipede to bite Shen Yushu, all without anyone being the wiser. Shen Yushu would certainly never know.
"Sure thing, Brother Liang!" Gao Xiaofu turned and went to buy the drinks, while Zhong Yongliang sat down on a nearby flowerbed. "Little Shu, be honest with me—do you really think I'm fit to be Gu Mengyao's guard? I keep feeling like you've been playing me all along."
"About that—well, I can tell you honestly, when Arrow-Brand Brother first came, we gave him no end of grief too, but he dodged us time and again and never let us get the better of him, and that's the necessary path to becoming Sister Yaoyao's guard," Shen Yushu said. "As the saying goes, to forge iron you must yourself be strong; a gentleman who fails blames his own training. So if you got played, it only means your abilities aren't up to par yet and you still need more tempering."
"Is that so..." Zhong Yongliang thought it over carefully, and Shen Yushu's words did make some sense. Indeed, at the very beginning they had not thought much of Wei Zhao either, and had even egged him on to teach Wei Zhao a lesson. It seemed Shen Yushu had not been lying this time.
But not lying this time did not mean Zhong Yongliang would let Shen Yushu off the hook. Just then Gao Xiaofu came running back with three bottles of drinks, gave one to Shen Yushu and another to Zhong Yongliang, and drank one himself.
Shen Yushu was not on her guard at all and took it directly. After all, Zhong Yongliang had always given her snacks before, and it never occurred to her that Gao Xiaofu would tamper with the drink bottles.
"Glug, glug..." Zhong Yongliang drained his drink in one go, tossed the bottle aside, stood up, and said to Shen Yushu: "How about I give you a demonstration of my ultimate move right now? See whether I can beat Wei Zhao!"
"Sure!" Shen Yushu nodded and watched as Zhong Yongliang began to perform the martial technique on the spot. This technique was performed, not channeled, but Shen Yushu naturally did not know that. Seeing Zhong Yongliang go through the motions so convincingly, she assumed he had learned some new martial technique from somewhere.
Zhong Yongliang put on his show for a while, and while Shen Yushu was not looking, he released the Hundred-Drunk Centipede...
When the Hundred-Drunk Centipede was not under attack, its default behavior was to seek out the lure solution. Shen Yushu was not far away, and the centipede locked onto her in an instant. It darted swiftly to her side, crawled up inside the cuff of her trousers, and bit down...
"Hm? What's that?" Shen Yushu suddenly felt a slight pain in her calf. Just as she was about to check what it was, a wave of dizziness and blurred vision came over her, and she collapsed straight to the ground, unconscious.
Having succeeded, the Hundred-Drunk Centipede quickly withdrew from Shen Yushu's trouser cuff and slipped back into Zhong Yongliang's sleeve.
"Haha, this Hundred-Drunk Centipede really works!" Seeing Shen Yushu collapse outright, Zhong Yongliang was overjoyed, his confidence doubling, and he was filled with hope for his contest with Wei Zhao that afternoon. In his elation he said to Gao Xiaofu: "Give me the phone—I'll call Yaoyao and have her come take Shen Yushu back!"
"Okay!" Gao Xiaofu hurriedly handed the phone to Zhong Yongliang. Zhong Yongliang had been practicing martial arts earlier and it was inconvenient to carry the phone on him, so he had given it to Gao Xiaofu to keep.
Taking the phone, Zhong Yongliang dialed Gu Mengyao's number directly.
Shen Yushu had gone to scout out the situation, and Gu Mengyao had ordered food in the cafeteria and was waiting for her to return when she suddenly received Zhong Yongliang's call, which filled her with a sense of unease. "Hello? Zhong Yongliang, what is it?"
"Yaoyao, something terrible has happened—Little Shu suddenly fainted!" Zhong Yongliang said urgently.
"What? Little Shu fainted? What happened?" Gu Mengyao was alarmed and sprang to her feet. Paying no mind to the meal on the table she had not yet had time to eat, she ran straight out of the cafeteria and headed toward the park behind the school.
"I don't know either. Little Shu said she wanted to watch me practice martial arts, so I performed for her, and then she suddenly fainted for no apparent reason. I didn't dare move her, for fear it was some acute illness flaring up, and that moving her would only make things worse..." Zhong Yongliang said.
"Brother Liang... you..." Zhong Yongliang was still explaining things to Gu Mengyao when Gao Xiaofu cut in from the side.
"Xiaofu, don't talk for now—whatever it is, it can wait!" Zhong Yongliang interrupted Gao Xiaofu impatiently, then continued to Gu Mengyao: "Yaoyao, hurry to the park behind the school. Propriety between men and women, you know—it wouldn't be proper for me to carry her to the school infirmary..."
"Okay, I'll be right there!" Gu Mengyao said, then hung up and quickly called Wei Zhao, telling him about Little Shu fainting and asking him to hurry to the small park behind the school as well.
After hanging up, Zhong Yongliang finally looked at Gao Xiaofu. "Xiaofu, what is it? You're in such a rush—didn't you see I was on the phone with Gu Mengyao? What if something slipped out?"
"No, Brother Liang, your sleeve..." Gao Xiaofu pointed at Zhong Yongliang's sleeve, his expression one of horror.
"What's wrong with my sleeve?" Zhong Yongliang asked, startled and uncomprehending.
"Your sleeve—it's smoking..." Gao Xiaofu said, and then suddenly cried out in alarm: "Oh no, your sleeve is on fire..."
"What?" Startled, Zhong Yongliang then noticed that the clothes on his body were already smoking, and flames were leaping from his sleeve! This frightened him badly: "What's going on? What happened to my sleeve? How did it catch fire?"
Even as he shouted, Zhong Yongliang threw himself to the ground and began rolling rapidly. He knew a thing or two about emergency measures for clothes catching fire and knew this could put out flames, but it did no good. He rolled several times on the ground, yet the flames on his sleeve still blazed fiercely!
