Chapter 273 — Shark? Kill the Shark! What Reassured Wei Zhao Was That Since the Rope Snapped, the Jade Pendant on Him Had Given No Warning, Meaning No Danger Was Present

The Blossom Guardian

It seemed he had just about cleared out the skilled fighters around Li Cihua. With those two Yellow-rank experts dead, Li Cihua really had no capable men left to send, reduced to dredging up trash like Xiao Ma, who actually dreamed of staging an accidental death for him or Gu Mengyao with such crude tricks as playing ghost to scare people and cutting a rope.

Even so, Wei Zhao would not lower his guard. Even if Li Cihua had no strong hands at the moment, it could only be temporary, for Li Cihua had said it himself. He was not alone. He was merely a spokesman in Songshan, and behind him stood a boss pulling the strings.

At last Wei Zhao faintly made out the coastline, though how far it lay from the city of Songshan he had no way of knowing. He carried nothing with GPS on him, and could only judge his rough position by the sun.

He had not thought they would be swept so far after hitting the water. Wei Zhao gave a wry smile. If Shen Yushu had not choked on water and kept him busy tending to her, the sea would never have carried him this far out.

Shark... Wei Zhao narrowed his eyes slightly. Not far off on the surface, a shark's dorsal fin was cutting swiftly toward him.

Wei Zhao frowned. As a rule, sharks in the sea would not attack a man on their own, without being provoked or lured by blood, for human flesh was nothing particularly tasty to a shark.

Unless starving beyond endurance or excited by the smell of blood, a shark would usually ignore a human altogether. That, of course, was only the common case. There were exceptions, especially vicious brutes among sharks that cruised the shallows, waiting for a chance to strike at a target.

Wei Zhao could not yet tell whether this shark meant to attack him, but he kept his steady pace toward shore all the same. If the beast was full, it should leave him alone and swim on past him.

If it meant to attack, waiting for it here would do no good. Come what may, he would meet it head on. A single shark was nothing Wei Zhao held in any regard.

Still, as he swam, the dagger hidden in his shoe found its way back into Wei Zhao's hand.

Unfortunately, the shark did seem to have marked Wei Zhao as its target, as if it had caught the scent of prey, and it quickened toward him.

Strong as Wei Zhao was, he could not outswim a shark. Watching it come on, he gauged the distance between them even as he swam on without slowing. Only when a few hundred meters still lay between him and the shore did he stop, for the shark was now only tens of meters away.

As lord of the sea, the shark clearly held Wei Zhao in contempt. In its eyes, Wei Zhao had already become its prey.

Wave after wave, stronger and rolling one upon another, surged past Wei Zhao from behind, and the shark drew ever nearer. The great white, huge as a car, opened its gaping bloody maw, ready to make its first rushing pass at Wei Zhao.

Wei Zhao's left hand tugged Shen Yushu closer by instinct, to keep her from drifting out of his control. In fact, her arms and legs were still locked tight around his body. He was only making sure, so he could turn his mind at ease to dealing with the shark.

Blade in his right hand, left hand clenched into a fist, Wei Zhao kept his eyes fixed hard on the great white.

"Hush--" A swell rolled in and the shark charged at Wei Zhao. Wei Zhao did not dodge, but floated motionless in the water, waiting for its attack.

The shark perhaps had not expected its prey to go still. Such a thing seldom happened. Once marked, prey always fled first, and Wei Zhao's halting left the shark hesitating.

Among creatures of the sea, the shark's intelligence ranked high. Faced with something unnatural, it would not simply rush in blindly. Seeing Wei Zhao lie still, it too slowed its swimming, though it still seemed to despise this creature so much smaller than itself.

Though it slowed its approach toward Wei Zhao, it had not given up its intent to attack. It only closed in more slowly.

In an instant, the shark lunged suddenly at Wei Zhao, its patience perhaps spent. In that same instant, Wei Zhao struck too, his left fist lashing out hard at the shark's snout!

This was one of the most vulnerable spots on a shark's body, a weakness Wei Zhao knew like the back of his hand.

"Bang--"

Such was Wei Zhao's strength that had this punch landed on a man, it might well have killed an ordinary person outright. It could not kill a shark, but it was enough to knock the shark's head sideways.

The shark felt the pain, but it only roused its bloodlust the more. Its gills flaring, it opened its jaws to bite at Wei Zhao. Pity for it, Wei Zhao gave it no chance. He drove his knife into its gills, slashed up and down inside a few times, then darted swiftly aside.

The shark thrashed a few times in the water, then went still, floating slowly to the surface, all its former menace gone. The gills were one of a shark's fatal spots, and Wei Zhao handled them with practiced ease.

With the shark finished by Wei Zhao, he naturally would not waste it. Who knew where he would land ashore? If hunger struck, shark meat, though none too tasty, would fill the belly well enough. That was the rule of survival in the wild.

Untying the cut rope from his leg, Wei Zhao looped it around the shark's tail and towed it with him toward shore. A burden like this, he scarcely felt.

Back in training, he had swum with iron blocks bound to his hands and feet all the same.

"Hah--" Wei Zhao clambered ashore and tossed the shark aside for the moment. The urgent task was to bring Shen Yushu round first.

When it came to reviving Shen Yushu, however, Wei Zhao hesitated. By the book, what was called for now was mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but that seemed rather like taking advantage of her. For when Wei Zhao saved a life, he had no need of mouth-to-mouth...

Yet Wei Zhao found Shen Yushu's allure hard to resist. He felt a good deal of fondness for her, at least more than for Gu Mengyao. This girl was sweet, easy to love.

Still, to take advantage of her while she lay unconscious was something Wei Zhao could not bring himself to do. Back in the sea, urgency had left him no choice, but now there were other ways.

True, Wei Zhao was fond of Shen Yushu, true he wanted to kiss her, but never in this way! He did not count himself a gentleman, but neither would he force himself on anyone.
