Chapter 652 — A Place in His Heart

The Blossom Guardian

So playing Brain-dead Girl came with this many perks? Qiu Lingshan clenched her fists. She had made up her mind: she would go on pretending from now on. With such a formidable helper at her side, wouldn't everything she did go smoothly?

Watching Wei Zhao's retreating back, Qiu Lingshan's heart was in turmoil. She had no idea what to make of her relationship with Wei Zhao — so complicated it gave her a headache. In all her life she had never before been so intimate with a man. And Wei Zhao was also the first man to see her most private parts. Qiu Lingshan ought to have been furious, yet no anger stirred in her heart; beyond a flush of shyness, remembering what had just happened carried with it a faint, thrilling pleasure.

That instant had felt truly wondrous. Should she... try it regularly from now on? The boldness of the thought startled even her. She tightened her grip on the pinhole camera — this thing absolutely must not leak out, or she was finished.

As for being seen by Wei Zhao, she no longer bore so heavy a burden in her heart. In front of him she was already Brain-dead Girl; she had already thrown her coy little tantrums. Now it was merely being watched by him while doing one shameful thing. Losing face once was losing face — ten or eight times was the same. Qiu Lingshan tossed the matter over her shoulder in a flash, and instead began to ponder who stood behind the kidney-harvesting ring...

In her view, getting Wei Zhao to capture the boss here should have been a trifling matter, yet he had not done it. Wei Zhao had come here, most likely, solely to rescue her! Qiu Lingshan knew Wei Zhao all too well: he was the classic sort who keeps well out of anything that does not concern him, who will not lift a finger for matters unrelated to himself. But that he had been willing to involve himself in her affairs gave her no small comfort — at the very least, she had not played Brain-dead Girl for nothing!

She still occupied a place of some sort in Wei Zhao's heart. He had not simply washed his hands of her.

At this thought Qiu Lingshan shook her head again, scolding herself inwardly: Qiu Lingshan, oh Qiu Lingshan — have you played Brain-dead Girl so long that you have actually gone a little brain-dead yourself? You have a little place in his heart, and you are already so pleased with yourself? How exactly like a concubine of the old society!

No — I am the one who asked him to help me, so I must keep on good terms with him! Qiu Lingshan thought better of it and began comforting herself all over again...

..................

Zhong Yongliang had never expected today to be his lucky day. Not only had the poisoning succeeded without a hitch, but before long he actually received a phone call from his father: a kidney source matching his had been found — and it was Wei Zhao's kidney, of all things!

Zhong Yongliang remained in a state of extreme elation until the moment he entered the operating room and the anesthetic went in. He had thought that getting his revenge on Wei Zhao would have to wait until Zhang Naipao came down the mountain, yet, unexpectedly, retribution had overtaken Wei Zhao so quickly.

To be on the safe side, Zhong Yongliang had blood drawn and matched once more against the sample previously collected from Wei Zhao. Only after everything checked out was he wheeled into the operating room.

Zhong Yongliang glanced at a gurney a short distance from his own. A person lay on it, clad in a hospital gown and wearing a disposable surgical cap; under the glare of the operating lamps he could not tell who it was, but it could only be Wei Zhao — of that he was certain.

"Mr. Zhong, please do not enter the operating room. It is a restricted area — even I am not allowed in as I please. If we were to carry bacteria in, it would not matter much if Wei Zhao were infected, but it would be a disaster if your son were."

"Very well, I shall wait here." Zhong Fabai nodded. "I truly have Young Master An and you to thank this time — that is why Yongliang was able to find a suitable kidney source so quickly!"

"It is nothing more than being in the right place at the right time." The tattooed man waved his hand.

Zhong Yongliang was given the anesthetic, and the "Wei Zhao" on the other side — An Jianwen — was injected as well. As for why An Jianwen lay unconscious, Dr. Wang had no desire whatsoever to find out. His job was simply to transplant that man's kidney into Zhong Yongliang.

Since joining An Jianwen's organization, Dr. Wang had handled kidneys every single day of his life, so he could not have been more familiar with the procedure. Without any false modesty, he could have done it with his eyes closed.

"Swish..."

The gleaming scalpel flashed, and An Jianwen was cut wide open; with practiced hands Dr. Wang excised his kidney.

"This really is a fine kidney!" Unable to help himself, Dr. Wang exclaimed as he looked at An Jianwen's kidney. "If this kidney were sold, it should fetch a very good price."

Though a partition divided the operating room from the preparation room, sound carried through easily. Dr. Wang's words were plainly meant for the tattooed man.

"Ha — but this operation was specially ordered by Young Master Wen: the kidney is to be transplanted into Zhong Yongliang free of charge. However fine the kidney, it cannot be sold!" The tattooed man laughed. In saying so he merely meant to do Zhong Fabai a personal favor, to make the man remember his kindness.

"Brother Tattoo, rest assured — I, Zhong Fabai, am not one who fails to know a good deed. After this is over, I will certainly call on Young Master An in person to thank him!" How could Zhong Fabai fail to take the tattooed man's meaning? But if his son's kidney transplant truly succeeded, spending a few hundred thousand to show his gratitude would be no problem at all.

"Haha, that won't be necessary! Dr. Wang, do this operation well!" The tattooed man smiled and instructed the doctor.

Dr. Wang counted as a core member of the organization, yet he had never had the chance to speak with An Jianwen directly. Most of the time it was the tattooed man who relayed An Jianwen's wishes to him. Consequently he had caught only occasional, blurry glimpses of what An Jianwen looked like, and he had not the least idea that the "Wei Zhao" lying on the operating table was in fact his own boss, An Jianwen!

The operation was a complete success. Dr. Wang swiftly sutured Zhong Yongliang's wound, then said to the tattooed man: "Brother Tattoo, the operation went very well; young Master Zhong is perfectly normal. Only — what should be done with this kidney source?"

The kidney source in question was, naturally, Wei Zhao.

The tattooed man was taken aback. He genuinely had no idea what to do with Wei Zhao. An Jianwen had given no instructions beforehand, and the tattooed man dared not presume to decide on his own, so he said: "Let me make a call and ask Young Master Wen first!"
