Chapter 885 — A Sudden Turn of Events: "Hmph, a Cheap Shot with the Tongue!" Zhen Yingjun Sneered. "Wei Zhao, for the Humiliation You Have Dealt Me, I Will Repay You Tenfold, a Hundredfold!"
With that, Zhen Yingjun made a gesture, and the warning pulse from the jade pendant on Wei Zhao's chest suddenly quickened to a frantic urgency!
Danger, right at that spot. Wei Zhao twisted aside on instinct, and a bullet grazed past him! A silenced pistol!
The shot came as a shock. He had never imagined that Zhen Yingjun would use a handgun against him; Wei Zhao had assumed the man meant to rely on that skilled fighter to do away with him!
Still, a few bullets were hardly enough to wound Wei Zhao. Now that his guard was up, he was certainly not about to let any of them find their mark.
One shot missed, and then, hard on its heels, muffled cracks rang out - "bang," "bang," "bang" - like beans bursting inside a bamboo tube, and countless bullets came streaking toward Wei Zhao!
So many of them? Nothing could have prepared Wei Zhao for the fact that Zhen Yingjun had laid an ambush with so many gunmen waiting for him! This man was a formidable enemy indeed!
For all that Zhen Yingjun seemed wild and overbearing, he was not Zhong Yongliang, nor was he Zhao Qibing: he actually understood the art of smothering a man in a sea of gunfire! Had Wei Zhao not broken through to the Mystic rank and still lingered at late Yellow rank, there would have been no possible way he could have dodged the fire of so many bullets!
But Wei Zhao had already advanced to the Mystic rank, and with the nimble body and distinctive footwork left over from his days as an assassin, he scraped narrowly past the first volley!
"Keep firing! Fire, fire, fire! Shoot him dead!" Seeing that Wei Zhao had somehow slipped through a round of bullets, Zhen Yingjun was instantly ablaze with rage. "You pack of useless sacks! So many guns, and you cannot kill a single man?"
Zhen Yingjun was still a long way off from Wei Zhao, and with no fear that the man would come charging at him, he spoke without the slightest restraint. After all, even if Wei Zhao did charge, Ma Zhu, that skilled hand, was at his side!
"Bang." "Bang." "Bang."
The muffled gunfire rang out again - but this time, something unforeseen occurred...
"Aaargh -" Amid the dull crack of the shots, a sudden scream tore through the air. A gunman lying in ambush was flung whole out from behind the rock that had hidden him, slammed down onto the ground, twitched twice, a thread of fresh blood seeping from the corner of his mouth, and then he moved no more...
This sudden turn left everyone present frozen in disbelief. Zhen Yingjun was stunned, Ma Zhu was stunned, the two black-clad guards were stunned, and every one of the hidden gunmen was stunned as well!
Never in their wildest dreams could they have imagined it: a comrade who had been lying in ambush, firing, one moment, was the next an airborne acrobat, whooshing out from behind the rock as though a spring had been fitted beneath his backside, to crash to the ground, dead or alive unknown.
But before they could even begin to fathom what had happened, the unforeseen struck a second time!
"Aaargh -" Another scream, and yet another member of the musketeer squad in hiding saw his dream of becoming Superman come true: whoosh - out he flew, and hit the ground. This time he did not even twitch; he simply blacked out cold, life or death unknown...
"What is going on? What is going on? Wei Zhao, did you bring men?" Alarm sprang onto Zhen Yingjun's face. Even a fool would have grasped by now that something had gone wrong - and that whatever it was must have to do with Wei Zhao!
"I didn't." Wei Zhao shook his head. "I truly brought no one. You told me to come alone, so I came alone."
"That..." Zhen Yingjun was thrown by how certain Wei Zhao sounded. It was not that he doubted the man's word; after all, whether Wei Zhao admitted to bringing others or not was beside the point now that blows had been exchanged - he had no reason to lie. Yet Wei Zhao insisted he had brought no one, and that left Zhen Yingjun thoroughly baffled.
And while Zhen Yingjun stood puzzling over it, yet another musketeer in ambush became an airborne acrobat: whoosh - out he flew and lay stiff upon the ground!
"The enemy has help... seems it's not a person..." Ma Zhu knitted his brows and said, word by word.
He was an external-school expert, skilled in both attack and defense, but his eyesight was poor; he was only stating his judgment on the basis of what the signs before him suggested.
"Young Master Jun, perhaps we should fall back a bit? It is rather dangerous here!" one of the black-clad guards beside Zhen Yingjun suggested cautiously.
"All right!" Zhen Yingjun was frightened too. He no longer dared stand out front striking poses, and instead retreated behind Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu, using the two of them as his shield.
When Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu saw that Wei Zhao had come to rescue them, their hearts in truth surged with emotion. Though Gu Mengyao was certain it must be terribly dangerous for him to come here, the instant she saw Wei Zhao appear, a sudden sense of peace came over her.
It was the feeling of having found something to lean on, and her fear and tension of a moment before simply melted away. It was a good feeling - warm.
But Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had no idea that Zhen Yingjun had gunmen hidden nearby; they had only been brought out of the cave just before Wei Zhao arrived, so when gunfire began banging away on every side, the two of them were frightened half out of their wits!
They even forgot to cry out, forgot that they too were in the midst of danger, and only watched Wei Zhao with pounding hearts. They wanted to warn him to be careful, yet feared to distract him, and so the two sisters, by unspoken accord, both chose silence.
When they saw Wei Zhao dodge the bullets, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu finally let out a breath. So Wei Zhao really was formidable - did that fool Zhen Yingjun imagine a few guns could shoot him dead? Not a chance!
And afterward, when Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu watched Zhen Yingjun's musketeers come flying out of their hiding places one after another, falling dead to the ground, the two of them were as astonished as Zhen Yingjun himself. Yet a moment later, a strange light flickered through Gu Mengyao's eyes.
"Xiaoshu, could that be General Mighty?" Gu Mengyao said softly, a little uncertainly, to Shen Yushu.
"Oh?" Hearing this, Shen Yushu rubbed her eyes in disbelief. "Well, I'll be - it's true what they say, you take on the color of whatever you keep close to. General Mighty has spent so long with Shield Bro that he has turned this ferocious too; he is practically a Shield Dog!"
Their words, of course, never reached Zhen Yingjun's ears; he was too terrified now to spare a thought for eavesdropping on Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu. What was unfolding before him was too bizarre. Wei Zhao had plainly come up alone - his own subordinate had told him so with his own mouth, and that subordinate was still stationed at the foot of the mountain; apart from Wei Zhao, no one else had come up. So then how had his men died?
