Chapter 1153 — Omnipotent Shu: Out of the Tent with Feng Xiaoxiao, a Whiff of Damp Sea Wind Struck the Nose, Quite Refreshing
Wei Zhao glanced toward Gu Mengyao's tent; it still seemed quiet inside, so he did not go over and disturb them. Instead, he and Feng Xiaoxiao went down to the seaside by themselves and sat down on the sand.
"It's so dark ..." Feng Xiaoxiao curled up and pressed herself deeper into Wei Zhao's arms.
"The darkest hour is always just before dawn." Wei Zhao smiled and gathered her close. "Are you cold?"
"A little — but the moment you hold me, I'm not!" Feng Xiaoxiao smiled sweetly. "Wei Zhao, hubby, look — there are still stars in the sky!"
"Mm ..." Wei Zhao nodded, his thoughts drifting, without his noticing, back to the border of some small European country, and to that night with Yuning.
That day too had been in the small hours: the two of them had sat at the mouth of a cave, gazing up at the scatter of stars across the sky — how like today it was!
And yet in the mere blink of an eye, everything had changed: the places were the same, the people were not.
The stars were the same stars as before, but the person at his side had become Feng Xiaoxiao.
The Wei Zhao of those days had been utterly lost about the future, not knowing where life would take him, nor when his wandering days would ever end! He had not dared to speak of love then; toward love his only answer was flight. He could give Yuning no promises at all, nor the life she wanted!
She was a tender flower, pampered and raised in a hothouse, while he — he and she were people of two different worlds entirely! So Wei Zhao chose to run.
(See Chapters 001-010: the Valentine's Day special, the Yuning chapters.)
Though in the missions that followed they met again, and Yuning proved nothing like as fragile as he had imagined, Wei Zhao still dared not take a single step across that line; he never forgot who he was! He did not want Yuning to live in fear for his sake — she deserved a stable and happy life, did she not?
But though this love lay buried in his heart, the bond between Wei Zhao and Yuning grew ever more ambiguous ... until the day the Yu family stepped in to intervene ...
Wei Zhao frowned, unwilling to think any further.
Let the past be past. At the very least, Wei Zhao was content now — and happy!
This mission had let Wei Zhao truly merge into the great city, become an ordinary man, and feel real emotion.
The reason Wei Zhao had opened his heart was the old man's words. The old man had promised him that this would be the last mission of his life; once it was done he could retire and settle down in Songshan City. That promise lifted the old dread of a wandering life, and only then did he open his heart and take in Tang Yun and Feng Xiaoxiao.
"Wow! How romantic!" A shriek from behind tugged Wei Zhao's thoughts back to the present. He did not need to look to know who had spoken — it was Xiaoshu; only she had such a way of jumping and exclaiming.
"You're all awake?" Wei Zhao turned his head, and sure enough, the eldest young lady, Xiaoshu and Tang Yun had all come.
"How romantic can the two of you be? Snuggling together at the seaside in the middle of the night — I'm jealous!" Shen Yushu grinned down at Feng Xiaoxiao. "Tell you what, let's swap?"
"Swap what?" Feng Xiaoxiao reddened a little, but said: "There's room on hubby Wei Zhao's side — go sit on his left!"
"Hehe, then I won't stand on ceremony — Brother Arrow gets to have a girl on each arm!" Laughing, Shen Yushu went to sit down beside them.
But Gu Mengyao caught her by the arm. "Stop making trouble — let's get some breakfast ready to welcome the sunrise."
"Oh, right!" Shen Yushu remembered that she had a task this morning — she was to fry an egg for Feng Xiaoxiao — so she obediently went off with Gu Mengyao and Tang Yun to fetch things out of the car.
"I feel so happy!" Feng Xiaoxiao rested her head on Wei Zhao's shoulder and quietly savored the peace of the moment.
"If you like it, we'll come to the seaside often to watch the sunrise — every year." Wei Zhao said.
"Mm!" Feng Xiaoxiao's nose stung and a pang of sorrow rose in her. Every year, was it? Perhaps this would be the last time in this life that she watched the sunrise over the sea!
Wei Zhao had more or less guessed what Feng Xiaoxiao was thinking, and it only strengthened his resolve to find some way of curing her!
The stars in the sky gradually faded away, and above sea and sky there appeared the white glow of the hour before dawn.
"It's about to be light," Wei Zhao said. "Another new day."
"Yes — I've lived another day!" Feng Xiaoxiao sighed, touched.
By now the eldest young lady, Xiaoshu and Tang Yun had all the outdoor cooking gear laid out and ready.
"Brother Arrow, everything's set up — we can start!" Shen Yushu came running over.
They could manage the preparations well enough themselves; but what remained had to be handled by Wei Zhao's own hands.
"Xiaoxiao, wait for me a moment — I'm going to get breakfast going." Wei Zhao said.
"Can you ... not go? I don't want you to walk away ..." Feng Xiaoxiao said, clinging a little.
"Don't worry — before the sun comes up, I'll have breakfast sorted, guaranteed!" Wei Zhao smiled.
"Mm, all right then — I'll wait for you!" Feng Xiaoxiao nodded.
Wei Zhao stood up and walked with Shen Yushu to the fire pit they had made yesterday, quickly getting the flames going. But looking at the eggs on the ground, he was stumped once more! Yesterday had been a barbecue — all he had to do was set the food on the grill. But fried eggs, with no iron plate and no frying pan — how was he supposed to fry them?
"If only I had a frying pan ..." Wei Zhao said with a wry smile.
"You do!" Shen Yushu handed him a frying pan, right on cue.
"Huh? You even brought a frying pan?" Wei Zhao blinked. "What about a spatula?"
"That too! For Omnipotent Shu, it's no problem at all!" Shen Yushu handed him a spatula.
"Uh ... sure enough, Omnipotent Shu — all-powerful indeed ..." Wei Zhao smiled ruefully, not knowing whether he ought to praise Shen Yushu or scold her.
When Wei Zhao had been driving, he had noticed how heavy the car felt. Since Shen Yushu had brought even a frying pan and a spatula, the trunk very likely held a good deal more besides!
Still, right now Wei Zhao had no time to fuss over that; the pressing matter at hand was frying the eggs.
Wei Zhao fried several eggs in quick order, handed a few to Tang Yun, the eldest young lady and Xiaoshu, kept two for himself, and carried them over to Feng Xiaoxiao in quick strides. "Here — eat up!"
At the smell of the fried eggs, Feng Xiaoxiao froze!
"How did you know I wanted to eat fried eggs while watching the sunrise?" Feng Xiaoxiao asked, bright with surprise.
"I didn't know — I just threw something together." Wei Zhao naturally could not admit that he had peeked at Feng Xiaoxiao's phone. "Isn't this what people usually have for breakfast?"
"But here on the seaside ... I never thought you could actually fry eggs!" Feng Xiaoxiao said happily, lifting the plate in front of her.
