Chapter 1326 — Yu Xiaoke Is Exhausted: Earlier, after seeing it, the male half of the Couple Bandits likewise declared that this ancient tomb was no simple matter, and that was why the dark, scrawny man had called in outside help.
"Oh." Wei Zhao did no more than nod.
"If you two get hungry, you can buy something to eat over there." With that, the short, thin man pointed at the two trucks not far off.
"No need. We brought our own!" Wei Zhao said flatly, then went back to the car, while Chen Yutian drove off to look for a place to camp.
"What the hell, what a dumbass!" Beside the short, thin man, a burly fellow clutching a submachine gun watched the car's receding shape, spat a thick wad of phlegm on the ground, and cursed: "Thinks he's really somebody, doesn't he? Rolling in money like that, and he still brings his own food every time — why doesn't a tomb trap do him in?"
"He's not one of us. We've never seen eye to eye. He's probably afraid we'd poison his food." Old Hei shook his head and said nothing more, going straight back to his tent.
"Wei Zhao, you're really something!" Only after the car had driven far off did Qiu Lingshan offer her praise. "I was scared stiff just now, terrified Old Hei would see through us. His eyes are like swords — as if they can cut straight into a man's thoughts! And you, you just climbed out and traded insults with him!"
"So I cursed him. So what." Wei Zhao said flatly. "What do we do now? Pitch a tent like they did?"
"Yes. According to the information, the Couple Bandits don't get along with any of the other tomb robbers. There's no one they're close to, so we don't need to call on anyone else. We just wait quietly here," Qiu Lingshan said.
Wei Zhao nodded, got out and set to pitching the tent with Chen Yutian, then took some food from the car and went inside.
In the distance, Old Hei kept the binoculars trained on Wei Zhao's little group. Only when he saw them put up their tent and go in, as anyone would, with nothing else out of the ordinary, did he let out a breath of relief.
Though Old Hei found nothing wrong with the Couple Bandits today, everything seeming perfectly normal, somehow he could not shake the feeling that the man of the pair gave off a sense of danger, different from before.
Old Hei shook his head. Perhaps he was being too sensitive.
Inside the tent, Chen Yutian and Qiu Lingshan gnawed bread and drank mineral water, while Wei Zhao ate a few casual bites and then began to cultivate. The jade pendant's space held boundless energy to draw upon, so it made no difference whether he ate at all; that mouthful of bread had been nothing but habit.
"Tonight we'll keep watch in turns — one of us on guard while the others sleep," Qiu Lingshan planned between bites. "I'm uneasy. I'm afraid these people will spot something and turn on us."
"There's nothing for them to spot just yet. But it's no trouble — you two sleep. I'll keep watch," Wei Zhao said, unconcerned. "Cultivating is about the same as sleeping for me. I can sense everything that happens outside."
Qiu Lingshan's mouth fell open in astonishment, and she said no more. She knew well enough how uncanny Wei Zhao was. She had seen it too many times to find it strange now.
Yu Xiaoke was about to drop dead from exhaustion. Money — it truly was not so easy to earn. Picking up a bit of extra cash to help out the orphanage was a damned hard business!
The orphanage had recently received a large donation from Songshan City No. 1 High School, over two million in all, but they could not simply sit there eating through it. If there was money to be made, Yu Xiaoke was not about to let the chance slip! Right now Songshan City's crackdown on theft was still in full swing, and she had no business at all. She could only look elsewhere.
Before this, she had posted a commission on the Thief Sect's website. A few days ago, a tomb-robbing outfit called Red Pagoda had taken up her commission and asked her to come help rob a tomb. And so Yu Xiaoke had come.
But she had no car. She had rented one before, yet the driver would take her at most as far as the village up ahead, and not one inch farther, no matter what. There was no help for it: the car Yu Xiaoke had called was a taxi, a sedan, and any more of this road would rip its undercarriage open. No amount of money would get him to drive on.
So once she got out, Yu Xiaoke had no choice but to walk. Even though she was an heir of the Flying Swallow Sect and her lightness skill was formidable, walking a good dozen kilometers in one breath was enough to wear her out completely. And remember, she was a girl — her stamina had never been much to begin with.
"Fuck, I'm finally here!" Yu Xiaoke was so worked up she could have cried. Seeing the tents not far ahead, she could not hold back a cheer of "Long live!", then roused her lightness skill and, gritting her teeth, dashed forward.
"Who goes there?" Old Hei, as before, blocked Yu Xiaoke's way with several submachine-gun-toting men at his side.
"Someone from the Flying Swallow Sect," Yu Xiaoke halted, gasping for breath.
"You... you walked here?" Old Hei had seen someone come running and been puzzled by it, never imagining it would be the Flying Swallow Sect people he had been waiting for! He could not help marveling inwardly: the Flying Swallow Sect truly were remarkable, to run all this way?
"That's right! And you didn't even send a car to fetch me. I'm dead tired!" Yu Xiaoke complained, rubbing her waist.
"The King of Heaven covers the tiger of earth!" Though Old Hei was nine parts certain the girl in black before him belonged to the Flying Swallow Sect, caution made him test her all the same.
"The Pagoda-Bearing Li Tianwang!" Yu Xiaoke said. "There, I've matched it. Now let me have a look at this ancient tomb of yours. Time we talked terms!"
"Of course! This way, please!" Old Hei nodded. He did not dare casually offend anyone from the Flying Swallow Sect; it was an old name in the Thief Sect, with a unique mastery of traps and hidden passages. "There's more than one crew in on this raid, so exactly how much you get has to be hashed out by everyone together. My word alone doesn't settle it... And naturally, it also depends on your own ability!"
Old Hei's meaning could not have been plainer: if you want a bigger share, you had better show some skill. If you really can get us into the tomb without trouble, then cutting you in on a piece of it is no problem; but if you turn out to be not much good, bringing you along is of little use — and you will simply be paid a fee for your labor.
"All right!" Yu Xiaoke nodded.
Wei Zhao was cultivating when footsteps sounded not far outside the tent. He returned to the present at once, rose to his feet, and said to Qiu Lingshan and Chen Yutian, "Someone's coming. Not a real fighter, though. Xiaotian, go out and take a look."
Chen Yutian had come here in the role of a follower, which was why Wei Zhao called him Xiaotian.
"Yes!" Chen Yutian nodded, rose, and walked out of the tent, just in time to see one of the men from Old Hei's side heading this way, still some distance off. Chen Yutian was quietly startled: Wei Zhao could sense him from that far away?
